Games at NEiA: 2011 Roundup

The new Game Concentration at NEiA has completed its first year, and an exciting year it has been as our game artists tackle new classes and challenges. We are thrilled to welcome to our teaching team veteran game designer Lenny Eusebi, 3D Guru Vinnie Lacour, and Animator Extraordinaire Ron Friedman, and appreciate all the support of our Advisory Committee members in game studios throughout New England!

INDUSTRY GAME TESTINMG ON CAMPUS:

In November 2011 we held an official focus testing session for local Indie Game Developer, Dejobaan Games. Twenty game and animation students spent an evening testing the new version of “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa A Reckless Disregard for Gravity” for Steam created by Dejobaan in partnership with Owlchemy labs.

Dejobaan Games Day: The Very Profesional Testing Team

A last minute update to the game meant an interesting hitch in the testing: how do we download 20 copies of the game simultaneously? It turns out we couldn’t, but the team solved the problem by downloading onto one machine and copying the source files to three thumbsticks that were then shared around the room. Finally, the game was available to all and high-flying hilarity ensued.

Who Is That Masked Game Tester?

Quotes from Dejobaan:
“Thanks to everyone’s thoughtful feedback! Jason and our faith in the students’ discretion made the event virtually hassle-free, with zero paperwork — no messy NDAs — just games…. We send a huge thanks to NEiA, or as we like to think of it now: NEiAaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!”

INDIECADE 2011:

In December 2011 a number of NEiA students and faculty participated in the annual holiday fundraiser for IndieCade. IndieCade is the Sundance Film Festival of the Independent Game Development world, and we were excited to submit art to their postcard raffle and poster contest. Here are a few of the cards we sent for this year’s theme “Lost in Space.”

Faculty Game Published: Slam Bolt Scrappers

2011 Saw the released of Slam Bolt Scrappers on PlayStation 3 by Fire Hose Games. Our own game and animation faculty member Jason Wiser was a lead artist on the game, which is a mash-up of super-smash bros style brawling and a sort-of reverse tetris in which players build weapons out of blocks to attack the other player’s tower.

The game is now available on PSN for only $10!

Jason Wiser’s past credits include lead animator for the pre-development team on Dance Central by Harmonix. He is currently working as Art Director on Map Monsters, a geolocation game by the creators of Magic the Gathering, and he is the founder of Yaya Play, a development community focused on games for little kids.
